Jonah

God said to Jonah son of Amittai

Go to Nineveh and say the great city must repent

but Jonah went to Joppa and to Tarshish bought him passage

on a boat from God

God stormed upon the sea to wreck the boat

the sailors threw everything overboard but Jonah slept below

decks

the captain said Pray to God to have mercy

and they found that Jonah was to blame by lot

and they inquired of him why

and he told them I am a Hebrew who fears God

and they were afraid because he told them he had fled

and they asked what they could do

and he told them Throw me overboard

nonetheless they endeavored to land the ship

and besought God Have mercy on us relieve us of blood guilt

and threw him overboard the sea grew still

they sacrificed to God

God sent a whale to swallow up Jonah whole for three days

and nights

Jonah prayed to God inside the whale

In my grief in hell I cried you heard

you put me in the seas

I was an outcast I looked back at the temple

I was all at sea

I reached bottom you raised me

when my soul fell I thought of you and prayed

fools forget themselves

but I will sacrifice and be saved

and God opened the whale’s mouth and Jonah went ashore

God said to Jonah once again

Go to Nineveh and say what I told you

and Jonah went to Nineveh three days away

and went in saying Forty days more hath Nineveh

and Nineveh fasted and repented

and the king repented

and proclaimed a fast

and prayer and repentance and peace

God might repent him yet

and God repented

Jonah was cross

saying I knew you would repent

God let me die

God said Are you cross

Jonah stayed him in a booth to watch

God raised a castor-oil plant to shade him

and next day killed it with a worm

and raised an east wind and hot sun and Jonah said Let me die

God said Are you cross for the castor-oil plant Jonah said Like

to die

God said You did not raise the plant it came and went

Nineveh has 120,000 persons ignorant as dirt
