A rather elaborate Liebestod on a pretended theme of honor made dubious, enacted on a Nō stage for the camera, ending in an ecstasy of blood, ending on a Zen island.

Schrader re-creates the filming, with a reverse shot giving the sound stage, in Mishima.

The title is translated as “Patriotism”.
