The Beast with a
Million Eyes
The entire paranoid fantasy of a date rancher in the California
desert who’s losing money. The title character is beyond those mountains far
away across the sand and rocks and scrub, it informs his dog and the neighbor’s
cow and the birds of the air, his wife is collapsing, everything presses upon
him.
The Roger Corman school has a very distinguished associate, if
for no other reason than the stylistic congruity of the credit sequence.
The cinematographer is very lucky in his choice of night filter,
which endows his exteriors with an Ansel Adams touch.
If Hitchcock didn’t see it, he invented it in The Birds.
