The Toll Gate
The nearest thing
to this is Richardson’s The Border,
but there are a lot of films in between.
The outlaw
(William S. Hart) who gives up but is sold out faces his opponent in town and
burns both their houses.
He befriends a
widow and her son, under duress.
He defends
against the opponent’s gang, and walks away from the widow, whom his
opponent had abandoned.
This is laid in
the Southwest, above and below the border.
Hillyer opens beautifully,
the locations are perfectly filmed, the drama is
equally credited to Hart.
