Krapp’s
Last Tape
It might be
Butley’s office, very plain and modern. John Hurt with his moustache might
evoke Gregory Peck as Ambrose Bierce, some great writer.
There is the incomparable
banana ritual, dealing with the peel. Hurt constructs the performance very
skillfully, a work of art marked by a few correct readings where needed, the
artist has his bananas and booze, he is old, sales are not good, evidence of his
work is recorded, on his birthday, “the rhyme of the line” (Nabokov).
The métier is
most particular, the work sole evidence of being, or worse, sole existence
(Benn).
The author always
improves on it.
