The Last Valley

A scholar’s plight in the Thirty Years War. Slaughter and plague on every side, he lands in a village untouched, miraculously avoids a peace by obvious destruction, sees the end of every element inimical to cultivation, and departs.

A long lens in the Tyrol identifies the location very usefully as background to the military, clerical, peasant concerns. There is even a witch-burning, that commonplace of the period.
