Certain tedious appearances notwithstanding, the rationale is not digital industry but Peter Barnes’ teleplay, which is sumptuously and befittingly decked out in a Samarkand set-decoration full of nonsense and Koh-i-noor.

The direction is nimble, brisk, exquisite. The acting is glorified thereby, truly a great film.
