The structure is a Lone Star Western with John Wayne and Gabby Hayes, the setting is a barren earth and sea, a desolate city, after a war.

The “ravagers” are nomad gangs, the “flockers” live in caves together, Indians and homesteaders.

Richard Harris and Art Carney have the leading roles. The final phase is a rustbucket crammed with food, ruled by a captain (Ernest Borgnine) who declares “the land is finished”. Ravagers storm the ship, it blows up, survivors swim ashore, the captain had forbidden it.

There is a tremendous lapse of intelligence attendant on all this that is truly authentic in the predicament, the structure tells the real story.

Criticism seems to be wanting.
